Here is one more event that is putting Winnipeg on the map! Winnipeg National Bank Challenger presented by Manshield is a professional tennis tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation. The tournament will be held August 22-30 at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club located at 761 North Drive. It will see up and coming pros vie for world ranking and cash prizes up to $40,000.
Polar Tennis Management is hosting this event that has been bringing professional tennis players to its Winnipeg tournaments over the past three years. The tournament is growing in popularity and status and is currently the 6th largest professional tournament in Canada. Both men’s and women’s singles and doubles matches will make for exciting tennis action all week long.
Qualifying matches take place on August 22 and 23 and tournament play begins August 24. Admission is free, so it’s a great idea for a fun and inspiring summer outing for all ages!

The National Bank Challenger will host players from 17 different countries around the world from Australia to Russia.
Gonzalo Escobar, the 26 year old from Equador is ranked 286 in the world and is the top player confirmed and “accepted” into the tournament. He recently won a slew of singles titles and is searching for more. He will definitely be one to watch.
If you are excited to cheer on our fellow Canadians, there will be a few to choose from. The top ranked Canadian player receiving acceptance into the tournament is 21 year old Filip Peliwo from Vancouver. Peliwo is currently ranked 526 in the world. This year Peliwo took the France F3 Futures (IH) mens singles title and the Canada F9 Futures (IH) title in 2013.
Escobar and Peliwo are two of 18 players currently accepted into the tournament. The remaining 48 qualifying entrants must duke it out for 2 days to receive entry. The matches are sure to be fast paced and filled with drama.
